Feeding the AI Fire: Storacha MCP Turns Up the Heat
AI just got spicier! The Storacha MCP lets agents store & fetch data with no custom APIs or central DBs. Plug in + build fast.
AI models and autonomous agents are producing more data than ever, from long conversations to multi-agent collaborations. Managing this data securely and reliably is becoming a real challenge.
That’s where the Storacha MCP Storage Server comes in! It connects AI applications directly to decentralized storage, using the Model Context Protocol (MCP) — a universal way for models to plug into tools and services.
With Storacha, AI agents get persistent, trustless memory powered by IPFS, Filecoin, and modern capability-based security like User Controlled Authorization Networks (UCANs). The result is a developer-first storage layer built for the next generation of AI. Let’s dive into how the Storacha MCP works & why it will supercharge AI!
What is the Storacha MCP Storage Server?
The Storacha MCP Storage Server is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for Storacha’s decentralized storage network. It lets AI applications store and retrieve files through a standardized interface, so no custom APIs or centralized databases are needed.
Under the hood, our MCP uses IPFS content addressing and the Filecoin network to ensure data durability. Every file is identified by a cryptographic content identifier (CID), making it tamper-proof and verifiable. Think of MCP as “USB-C for AI applications” — the universal way for models to connect to tools and data.
Storacha’s server acts like plugging a flash drive into your AI. But instead of saving locally, your data lives on a decentralized, resilient network. With no vendor or central authority controlling data, any MCP-compatible agent can store, share, and retrieve data through the same open protocol.
It’s a major upgrade: interoperability improves, integration becomes simpler, and your AI gains self-sovereign memory under your control.
How MCP Bridges AI and Storage
MCP was originally pioneered by Anthropic and others to make AI-tool interactions seamless. An MCP setup typically involves:
- MCP Clients (in the AI host) — e.g., an AI agent or LLM like Claude running an MCP client library.
- MCP Servers (tools) — services like Storacha that provide capabilities (e.g., file upload, file retrieve) via a standardized interface.
- MCP Host (the AI runtime) — the environment that connects the two.
When an AI agent needs to perform a tool action like uploading, the MCP client formats a request to the appropriate MCP server. The Storacha MCP server advertises a capability like “upload” and handles that request. Then the MCP will return a result — a Content Identifier (CID) and a success message.
All of this happens through a universal protocol understood by the AI, so you don’t have to write custom API calls for every model or framework. With Storacha’s server, LLMs can gain the ability to persist and fetch data from the Storacha decentralized network as easily as they would query any other storage tool.
Under the Hood: Architecture & Key Features
What makes the Storacha MCP Storage Server special? Underneath the friendly MCP interface is a robust decentralized storage architecture. Here are the key features and how they work:
- Content-Addressed Storage (IPFS/CIDs): Files are stored using cryptographic CIDs, making storage immutable, tamper-proof, and easily shareable. Agents retrieve exactly what was stored.
- UCAN-Based Identity & Authorization: Access control is handled through UCAN delegations, allowing fine-grained delegation without centralized authentication.
- Trustless Verification and Auditing: Every upload operation leaves a verifiable audit trail. Data integrity and availability are guaranteed by the combination of CIDs, UCANs, and decentralized storage networks like IPFS and Filecoin.
How to Connect and Use the Storacha MCP Storage Server
Let’s explore the tools exposed by the server and how any AI system can connect and integrate easily.
Tools:
The server exposes a standardized set of tools:
- upload: stores files in decentralized storage. Returns a CID to retrieve or verify the file later.
- retrieve: fetches files by CID and file path, with built-in content verification.
- identity: returns the storage agent’s decentralized identifier (DID) for trustless workflows.
Required Integrations:
- SDKs: Official TypeScript, Python, and Go libraries available
- Agents: Configure Claude, ElizaOS, or your own AI with env vars and commands in your config
- Modes: Use HTTP (with SSE) for remote/network or STDIO for local integrations
Here’s a sample LLM config (in JSON format) to illustrate how you might launch and connect to the server in STDIO mode directly from your LLM model:
{
"mcpServers": {
"storacha-storage-server": {
"command": "node",
"args": ["./dist/index.js"],
"env": {
// The server also supports `sse` mode; the default is `stdio`.
"MCP_TRANSPORT_MODE": "stdio",
// The Storacha Agent private key that is authorized to store data into
// the Space.
"PRIVATE_KEY": "<agent_private_key>",
// The base64 encoded delegation that proves the Agent is allowed to
// store data. If not set, MUST be provided for each upload request.
"DELEGATION": "<base64_delegation>"
},
"shell": true,
"cwd": "./"
}
}
}You can adjust these parameters with the agent’s private key and delegation proof as suggested in step 4 of the installation guide.
